Computer Workstation Ergonomics

Achieve optimum efficiency by creating an Ergonomic Workstation:

An untidy workspace obstructs comfort and productivity of the user. The ‘before’ image shows a basic workspace with a computer, it is clear that just by adding a computer the space becomes overrun with cables and the workstation’s ergonomic issues become apparent.

What is wrong?
  • The desk is cluttered by cables, causing trip hazard and not only are they unsightly but take up extra space under the desk.
  • The CPU (hard drive) is in the way, restricting space for leg room and access by being set below chair level
  • The computer screen is too low, below eye level and may cause neck pain.
What makes it right?
  • Cable management has been implemented in the form of the Slinky.
  • Cable tidies on the monitor arm post further clear away clutter of cables.
  • The CPU is stored off the ground for access via chair level and space creation.
  • A monitor arm (in this case the Wishbone) has been added for height adjustment to eye level for maximum comfort.

The Monitor

1. Ensure that your chair is set up correctly as per the manufacturer’s instructions and that you are seated at the correct height in relation to your workstation.

2. The computer monitor screen should be place directly in front of you so that your body and neck aren’t twisted when looking at the screen.

3. Viewing distance- the screen should be at a comfortable horizontal distance for viewing which is usually at an arm’s length (sit back in your chair and raise your arm and your fingertips should touch the screen.

4. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing height that doesn’t make the user tilt his or her head up or bend their neck down to see it. For a standard monitor, the top of the viewable part of the screen should be level with your eyes.

5. Screen image should be legible, flicker-free, stable and free from glare. It should also tilt and swivel easily to suit the user’s needs. If your legs are not reaching the floor, use a footrest.

The Laptop

1. As with the monitor screen, first step is to make sure your chair is set up correctly and is the right height for the workstation.

2. Use a laptop stand to raise the screen to an appropriate viewing height.

3. Use a separate mouse and keyboard on a suitable work surface.

4. The laptop screen should be placed directly in front and facing you, so that your body and neck aren’t twisted when looking at the screen.

5. Finally, the laptop should be at a comfortable horizontal distance for viewing such as arm’s length. If your legs do not reach the floor, use a foot rest.
