Designing out waste: Plastic-Free packaging

At CBS, we harness the power of design and creativity to eliminate unnecessary waste, envisioning a future free from plastic pollution, and moving towards a more circular system.

We have significantly reduced our reliance on plastic for our packaging to address the negative impact of plastic waste.

Our teams developed a paper-based packaging solution to ensure products reach their destination in perfect condition without any single-use plastic use. Over the past few years, the team has worked towards achieving 100% plastic-free packaging for all products by the end of 2025.

As of June 2024, 88% of our product portfolio is free from plastic packaging.

“We were inspired to remove single-use plastics from our products after learning of the impact that this category of plastics has on the environment and most notably the oceans. Paper-based solutions seemed the obvious route because it is both biodegradable and recyclable with established recycling infrastructure widely available” - Alexander Ambridge, Designer.

“’Our goal was to implement plastic-free packaging solutions for both new and existing products to reduce the environmental impact of packaging improving our products and our customer’s end-user experience’” - Nick Burgess, Operations Project Manager.

We’ve switched to paper-based materials that are easy to recycle, but also importantly don’t cause harm to nature as waste. The work on plastic-free product packaging was a breakthrough for many employees, demonstrating the tangible difference they could make, contributing to delivering innovative, conscious and effective packaging design solutions. The work on packaging continues so we can further minimise our impact.
